Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Washington, D.C. early Tuesday morning for a meeting with President Trump and to attend the funeral for Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.).
“Our number-one priority is anti-ballistic defense and strategic cooperation with America. Peace needs to be brought closer,” Zelensky wrote in a post on X at 1:30 a.m. EDT.
“Of course, on behalf of all of Ukraine, we will honor the memory of Senator Lindsey Graham. Together with everyone attending the ceremony in Washington, we will remember his commitment to security and freedom across the transatlantic community and around the world,” he added.
Trump and Zelensky are expected to meet in the 9:00 a.m. hour and discuss the current state of the war in Ukraine.
Zelensky recently said Kyiv is facing three major challenges, which include Russia receiving support from Iran, China and North Korea, in an interview with Sky News.
The Ukrainian president said Iran is sending Russia ballistic missiles, China is providing satellite assistance and targeting tech, while North Korea has promised to send 30,000 soldiers.
Kyiv is looking to gain the upper hand in the conflict before winter in hopes of securing a stronger stance in negotiations for peace.
Zelensky came under fire earlier this month for dismissing Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov after six months, despite improvement on the battlefield.
Before Fedorov was fired, Ukraine signed two agreements with European Commissioner for Defence and Space Andrius Kubilius, which granted Ukrainian defense companies access to research and development grants under the European Defence Fund to scale up production capacities.
Zelensky’s White House visit coincides with a Senate vote on a bipartisan Russia sanctions package backed by the late lawmaker, Graham.
Graham visited Ukraine 10 times over the course of his career and remained a strong advocate for supporting Ukraine in the war against Russia.
His funeral services will include a tribute from Trump, Sean Hannity and others on Tuesday at the Washington National Cathederal.
