President Trump said the late Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) “liked war” and was “very strong on the military” ahead of his funeral Tuesday.
“Lindsey liked war,” Trump said on “Fox and Friends.” “I jokingly say, and there’s nothing funny about it, but he’s never seen a war he didn’t like. He was very much into that.”
Trump said it was for “good reason” and said Graham helped him build the military up during his first term.
However, Trump did say that recently Graham had been saying it was a good time to make a deal with Iran.
“Very interesting with Lindsey, he was very much a hawk, as you would say, on Iran,” Trump said. “And over the last few weeks, I would say that he became like, if you could make a deal, it’s better making a deal in this case than just destroying the rest of the country.”
But he said Graham was more “militant” about the Russia-Ukraine war. Graham visited Ukraine earlier this month.
Graham was one of Trump’s staunchest supporters and arguably the biggest supporter for the Iran war in Congress.
Trump is expected to speak at the late senator’s funeral at the Washington National Cathedral later Tuesday.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenksy are also expected to attend.
Trump also praised Graham for being a “great politician.”
“He was able to bring people together,” he said. “If I needed a Democrat, he could usually produce that Democrat if I had to have him in an emergency.”
He said the two started off “a little bit on the rough side” when Graham was running for Republican presidential nominee in the 2016 election cycle.
“We started a little but rough, but then it got closer and closer,” he said. “It really ended up being a great friendship.”
