Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) on Monday said the Pentagon’s death toll revision for U.S. service members killed by Iran is an “act of cruelty.”

“It just is an act of cruelty. Think what that means for those families. But it is also the move of every autocrat in history, is to try to control reality, to control history, to control the line of what’s told,” Warren said during an appearance on MS Now’s “All In with Chris Hayes.”

Warren has strongly condemned the military conflict with Iran, criticizing it as an illegal, reckless and unplanned.

Lawmakers are raising concerns with the Pentagon’s decision not to report three strikes on American bases in the Middle East and concealment of dozens of injuries in addition to deaths.

The Iran conflict has resulted in the deaths of 18 U.S. service members and 427 injuries.

However, in recent days, the Pentagon has moved to classify four deaths as “Overseas Operations” on the Defense Casualty Analysis System website.

Ten injuries were also removed from the tracking page, despite direct links to the war.

“Injuries in the military encompass everything from minor sprained ankles during routine training to incidents entirely unrelated to combat operations,” Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell wrote in a previous statement on the matter, defending the decision to mask injuries, deaths and strikes.

However, Democratic and Republican lawmakers have rejected the notion.

“Let me explain this absurd ruse: The Pentagon is pretending there have been two Iran wars separated by a brief cease-fire,” GOP Rep. Thomas Massie (Ky.) said in a statement on the change in casualties.

“The reality: By going more than 90 days without congressional authorization, Secretary Hegseth IS BREAKING THE LAW and must be held accountable,” he added.

Democratic Rep. Joe Courtney (Conn.) said the American people “deserve answers” on the impact of the war, as administration officials say the war cost rests at $37.5 billion.

“This latest unseemly evasion on reporting war casualties in Iran by Pete Hegseth’s Pentagon is exactly the reason why on a bipartisan vote, the U.S. House passed a War Powers Act resolution last week,” Courtney wrote in a post on X.

“The Trump administration has failed to level with the American people about the justification for this War, what the end game is, what the depletion of munitions levels are, and most importantly what are the mounting human costs the men and women in uniform are paying for this unauthorized use of military force,” he added.
