Vice President Vance invoked the late Sen. Lindsey Graham’s (R-S.C.) fiery defense of Brett Kavanaugh at the then-Supreme Court nominee’s 2018 confirmation hearing during Graham’s memorial service at the Capitol on Tuesday.
“What he saw happening to Kavanaugh was not a policy disagreement, it was character assassination,” Vance told a crowd that included a bipartisan group of senators and Graham’s family.
“Lindsey got as fiery and as passionate as I have ever seen a human being get during a judicial confirmation, and I believe that he saved that nomination,” he continued.
Vance noted that the moment went viral, but that Graham did not do it for “social media clicks.”
“He did it for to do something at the very highest part of the Senate, which was to persuade his colleagues,” the vice president said.
“And persuade his colleagues he did,” he said. “Lindsey didn’t just earn a lot of headlines. He actually persuaded people. And that maybe is how I will choose most to remember my friend Lindsey Graham.”
Graham famously offered the heated defense of Kavanaugh after multiple women accused the nominee of sexual misconduct, saying Democrats were engaging in a character assasination of Kavanaugh.
Vance noted that Graham “would always vote for qualified judicial nominations.”
“He was criticized from our side of the aisle for that,” he said.
Graham’s memorial service at the Capitol is one of two taking place on Tuesday. The second service will be held at the Washington National Cathedral, where Trump will eulogize the late senator.
