Comedian Bill Maher accused President Trump of openly embracing “socialism” more than Democrats, as democratic socialism is on the rise in the U.S.

In a Friday segment on “Real Time,” Maher said Republicans were hypocrites when it came to accusing democratic socialists of being communist, especially the Trump administration.

“It’s so interesting, the wrinkle in this story, because now that they’re communists, there’s an opening for socialism. And you know who’s filling it? Donald Trump,” he said.

Maher called out the Trump administration’s stake in Intel, Nvidia and Nippon Steel, saying “we basically run their boardroom now.”

Trump said in April that federal stock holdings in Intel generated more than $30 billion over the last several months, after he authorized the U.S. government’s investment in the struggling semiconductor chip manufacturing company last summer.

“It’s like, what? The president is just singling out a huge CEO of an important company and so they had to scramble the Jets and have a meeting at the White House and what happened at the end of that meeting? Okay, you say we get 10% of your company. That is thuggish behavior,” Maher said.

The decision garnered support from Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) but drew pushback from Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) called it a “terrible idea” and a “step toward socialism.”

“If socialism is government owning the means of production, wouldn’t the government owning part of Intel be step toward socialism?” he wrote on social media.

“And you know this is socialism, I think, because Bernie Sanders agrees with it all. He wants to do it with the AI companies,” Maher continued.

Trump has likened democratic socialism to communism in remarks made to reporters in the Oval Office in June.

Candidates affiliated with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) have been winning elections across the country.

“I think it’s the biggest threat to our nation there is, maybe since our founding,” he continued. “That includes World War I, World War II, September 11, it includes the Pearl Harbor attack.”

“We have never seen anything like this in modern time,” Maher concluded about Trump’s government stake.
