(NewsNation) — Luigi Mangione, accused of killing ex-UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, is opposing restrictions on public access to his trial.
According to a new court filing, Mangione’s legal team is seeking to broadcast the trial live.
The team argued the court should not limit public and media access to the trial by selecting certain members of the press to attend.
“To be clear, the defense is not impugning the objectivity or independence of the reporters chosen to cover the trial,” the filing stated. “Rather, the defense objects to any process, and certainly one in which he had no involvement, where a small percentage of reporters seeking to cover the proceedings are permitted to do so.”
The lawyers for Mangione also objected to a decision not to broadcast the trial to an overflow courtroom.
His case has drawn national attention, with some praising the man who is accused of shooting a health care CEO, sharing frustrations with the insurance industry and UnitedHealthcare’s high denial rates.
Mangione is facing state charges for second-degree murder, along with weapons and forgery charges. He is also facing federal stalking charges.
The state trial is set to begin Sep. 8, with the federal trial expected to follow Jan. 5, 2027.
