Israeli forces detained more than 70 people across the occupied West Bank overnight Friday and into Saturday after violence in a northern Palestinian village killed two Israeli soldiers and four Palestinians.
According to The Associated Press, the Israeli military said in a statement that troops searched more than 300 locations and arrested people it described as Hamas affiliates, arms traffickers and other suspected militants. The military said 11 of those who were detained were arrested in Tell in the northern West Bank, where Friday’s deadly clashes occurred.
Amin Shuman, president of the Palestinian higher commission for the affairs of prisoners, told the AP that more than 80 Palestinians were arrested across the West Bank, and accused Israel of imposing “collective punitive measures and retaliatory policies.”
Israeli troops remained in Tell on Saturday as residents reported extensive military operations, including a raid on Nablus Specialty Hospital in the nearby city of Nablus.
Hospital director Ghassan Barkat told the AP that “more than 50 armed soldiers and officers stormed the hospital, terrifying the patients” on Friday, adding that they detained staff and patients and arrested an injured Palestinian in the presence of women and children.
“This should not happen in a healthcare institution,” Barket said to the outlet.
The Palestinian Health Ministry said four Palestinians were killed by Israeli gunfire during the clashes. The Israeli military confirmed that two Israeli soldiers were killed, including one who served in a local settler defense squad. Two other Israelis and four Palestinians were wounded.
While a fragile ceasefire has largely halted large-scale fighting, Israel has continued carrying out airstrikes in Gaza, where Gaza’s Health Ministry says more than 73,000 Palestinians have been killed since Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel.
