Dangerously hot temperatures spanned across much of the central U.S. on Saturday as a sprawling heat dome, in which a high-pressure atmospheric system traps hot air over a large area keeping temperatures high, settled over the region that could persist into next week.
Heat advisories went out for roughly 80 million people after the National Weather Service warned that oppressive heat stretching from Texas to North Dakota is bringing temperatures well above seasonal averages while offering little overnight relief.
Extreme heat warnings were in effect across portions of western Nebraska, where temperatures were forecast to reach as high as 108 degrees through the weekend.
Triple-digit highs were also forecast across parts of Montana and Wyoming, while Las Vegas was forecast to reach record temperatures, with highs reaching 114 degrees this weekend.
In areas across the Great Plains and the Midwest, daytime highs are expected to reach 10 to 15 degrees higher than normal as hot air is trapped over the region. High humidity will make conditions feel even hotter while unusually warm overnight temperatures offer fewer opportunities for relief, increasing risk of heat-related illness.
Officials urged residents to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged time outdoors during the hottest parts of the day and to seek air-conditioned spaces when possible.
Children, older adults and individuals with underlying health issues face greater risk of heat-related illness, including heat exhaustion and heat stroke, according to the National Integrated Heat Health Information System.
The latest heat wave follows several periods of extreme temperatures scorching parts of the U.S. this summer, including an early July heat wave across the East Coast that impacted July 4 celebrations for America’s 250th birthday.
According to the National Centers for Environmental Information, the continental U.S. experienced its second-hottest first half of the year on record this year.
