It's the best time of the year in NWSL, the playoff push. With just a few games left in the 2026 regular season and the NWSL Shield still up for grabs, every game from here on out feels like a must-win. But, add rivalry to the mix, and the stakes get a little higher.
Every great rivalry has iconic moments, and Gotham FC and Washington Spirit have already racked up several in recent years. Washington Spirit won a triumphant penalty shootout at Audi Field in the 2024 NWSL semifinals, and Gotham FC won last year's NWSL Championship game.
Earlier this season, Gotham took home bragging rights with a narrow 1-0 win for the first-ever victory at MLB's Citi Field in front of 42,175 fans.

The two teams will meet in a final regular-season fixture, just weeks before the NWSL playoffs begin. But both sides have stakes in the match. Gotham FC already claimed a postseason spot, are in first place, are leading the NWSL Shield race, and can potentially lift the shield. Meanwhile, the Spirit are in third place, still in contention for the shield, and chasing a playoff clinch.
However, both rosters face uncertainty ahead of the game. Injury concerns and cohesion struggles loom, and with the playoffs so close, gamesmanship could flare in a rivalry that's already typically cagey.

Injury concerns for Gotham FC
Gotham FC have been on an impressive run of form since the league returned following a summer break for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with only two losses since July 4. With an unbeaten run through August and more wins in September, the East Coast club has held on firmly to first place.
Equally impressive has been the club's ability to navigate changes across the sidelines and the roster. Head coach Juan Carlos Amoros and his family welcomed a new baby, and he took parental leave back in July.
"I'm incredibly grateful to everyone at Gotham FC for supporting us unconditionally while we were deciding to take this step," Amoros said in the summer. "This is a personal decision for our family, but I also recognize the visibility that comes with my role. When fathers take parental leave, particularly men in leadership positions, it helps normalize an important principle: Caring for children is a shared responsibility between parents. I need to be there for my family."
Between then-acting head coach Shaun Harris and Amoros, the club's record was ten wins, three draws, and two losses through September, and they also had to manage the roster as injuries piled up, with a season-ending torn patellar tendon for Emily Sonnett and a brief concussion precaution for Rose Lavelle.
The injury list is still growing ahead of Saturday's big game. Rookie Jordynn Dudley's impressive campaign was cut short with a foot fracture, and while on international duty, Brazilian defender Brunhina tore her ACL. Both players are on the season-ending injury list ahead of the weekend.
Jaedyn Shaw was recently called up to join USWNT camps with the U23 side, though she was sent home early as a precaution following a minor injury. She is currently day-to-day and expected to be available for Saturday's game against the Spirit.
The recent international window may have added minutes for players on national teams; it may have come at a good time for others ahead of a potential NWSL Shield clinch scenario. One of Gotham's strengths this season has been a deep bench that has played together for a few seasons, while rookies stepped up and new additions like Australian international Sam Kerr have slotted in fairly seamlessly following the departure of Esther Gonzalez.
The recent acquisition of Spain defender Leila Ouahabi could mean another tactical shift for Midge Purce, who could play more of an attacking role along the front line, while Ouahabi shifts into a natural position at outside back.
Cohesion struggles for Washington Spirit
The Spirit's second half of the season has been more split than Gotham. With eight wins, six losses, and one draw since July, the group has struggled to keep pace for the NWSL Shield, but looks primed for another postseason appearance.
Inconsistency in results isn't uncommon in a long NWSL season, and the Spirit shook off a four-game winless streak in August to finally pick up a trio of wins across five matches in September. Roster churn could also help explain some of the unevenness.
Beyond preseason movement, including key midfield departures Croix Bethune (Kansas City Current) and Narumi Miura (Utah Royals) to other playoff-contending teams at the start of the season, the club has made plenty of mid- to late-season roster shakeups.
Cameroonian midfielder Monique Ngock and Algerian midfielder Mélissa Bethi joined after the Women's Africa Cup of Nations, and the club recently signed Tanzanian national team forward Clara Luvanga. Mexico international Rebecal Bernal, with 20 appearances for the Spirit this season, joined Manchester United in September.
Losing a regular from the squad in the middle of a Shield chase left little time for the defense or midfield to readjust, especially with Leicy Santos out for an extended injury absence. Though there might finally be some light at the end of the long absence tunnel.
Both Andi Sullivan and Ashley Hatch returned to the roster following maternity leave midseason and earned match minutes, and head coach Adrian Gonzalez said in a recent pregame press conference that Santos will be available for selection against Gotham.
It's a sign that maybe the international break arrived at a good time for the club's recent signings and injured players. The franchise is investing in international talent, and that's positive for the present and future, but chemistry rarely arrives the moment a new deal is signed. Now that everyone has had a handful of games to get acclimated and a brief international break in the schedule, the Spirit can look ahead to managing the three games remaining in front of them, but first is a high-stakes game against Gotham.
What's at stake
There's plenty to play for on Saturday. Gotham is chasing a prize it has never won. With two NWSL Championships, a Concacaf title, and a recent NWSL Challenge Cup, the title of best team in the league has eluded them. They have a chance to hoist the Shield with a road win over one of their oldest rivals, with help from a North Carolina Courage win.
"There's not a lot of direct talk about it because we all understand that what we're doing every day and every week is what leads to that. So while it's an ultimate goal that we've set from the beginning of preseason, we have a good understanding that thinking about that goal is not necessarily what's going to get you there. It's what you're doing every day at training; it's what you're doing on the weekend playing these games," said Gotham defender Tierna Davidson before the international break.
"That's really what we're focused on, knowing in the back of our minds that that's what we're working towards together. I also think too, sometimes if you talk about something too much, you forget what's right in front of you. And that's important that we continue to focus on what's in front of us ... ultimately, as a team, we understand that there are short-term goals, midterm goals, long-term goals, but we can accomplish all of that together without having to compromise in any way," she said.
The Spirit have the math on their side in the Shield race, but they must beat Gotham and win their remaining games (nine points) to have a shot.
Beyond the shield, there is playoff positioning on the line for both sides. Even if Gotham stumble in their remaining games, the pride of playing for a home playoff is there. Teams that place first through fourth could potentially host up to two home games. Gotham has already clinched a postseason spot, and the Spirit can also cement another postseason berth with a win, or help from positive results by San Diego, Bay FC, or Chicago.
