The hotel is expected to remain closed until 2031 if cleanup is completed on time, though it has not yet announced a reopening date.
The closure will affect the hotel’s 282 guest rooms, event spaces and Palm Court restaurant, which are also expected to close in January, according to the New York Times. The property also houses 181 condominium units, though it remains unclear whether the restoration will affect residents.

Fairmont Hotels & Resorts declined The Hollywood Reporter’s request for comment.
Opened in 1907, the Plaza sits at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Central Park South, overlooking Central Park. Designed by architect Henry Janeway Hardenbergh, the 18-story building features French Renaissance-style architecture. The hotel was designated a New York City landmark in 1969.
The Plaza has also become a recognizable site in movies and television. Titles that were either shot or set in the hotel include Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992), in which Macaulay Culkin’s Kevin McCallister stays at the hotel, as well as North by Northwest (1959), The Way We Were (1973) and Eloise at the Plaza (2003), among others.
President Donald Trump also owned The Plaza from 1988 to 1995. Trump made a cameo in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.
The upcoming closure marks another major interruption in the Plaza’s history. The hotel previously shut down in 2005 for a renovation that converted many of its original guest rooms into private residences before reopening in 2008.
