The political situation in Washington, D.C., may shift rapidly, but one undeniable and unshakeable truth has emerged in recent years, one still borne out by polling: voters don’t trust the Democrats at all. They don’t like Democrats. And as unpopular as aspects of the Trump administration may be, it’s still the case that the American people are incredibly reluctant to return Democrats to power.
This is true, even on an issue where the Trump administration is comparatively weak. I’m talking about the Iran War.
It’s true that the American people have real questions about the advisability of the course of action Trump has taken. We don’t like living with higher gas prices, and we don’t like seeing American soldiers killed in yet another war in the Middle East. We’re also skeptical that we’re going to end up in a better situation than we were to start with, though President Trump has maintained this war is absolutely necessary in order to stop Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, which he says threatens our security and that of our allies.
The American people have mixed feelings about that, according to polling. But they don’t trust Democrats to do a better job.
The Democrats just can’t get past their reputation. Americans do not trust them to govern. Why is that? Well, I can only speculate. But if they’re watching the news, they see that the Democratic Party is currently in the midst of an internal revolution, where comparatively normal and sane Democrats are being replaced by far-left ideologues, some of whom are actually on the side of America’s enemies, like Hamas. It’s one thing to want to be less involved in the Middle East — I want to be less involved, please! It’s quite another to actually affirmatively root for the people who hate us and attack our allies.
That’s perverse. Yet it’s a vital part of the democratic socialist outlook.
These DSA types who are winning primaries also want to nationalize virtually all major companies, abolish prisons and ICE and our country’s borders, get rid of the Senate and the Supreme Court, and in short, place the government in charge of every aspect of your life. Does that sound appealing? Of course not. Which is why the DSA is killing the Democrats’ brand.
Not that bland centrist liberalism was doing much better of course. The Democratic establishment discredited itself with Joe Biden, by seeming to play into the lie that he was capable of serving for a second term. Americans haven’t forgotten about, and possibly they never will.
So it’s all bad news for Democrats, even though they should be easily taking back Congress this fall. But the further the party drifts toward socialism and outright communism, the less Americans will trust them to lead — and the more they say Trump, warts and all, may not be so bad.
