(NEXSTAR) – While any change you receive after your next cash transaction will likely be missing America’s smallest denomination, it may soon contain a new, limited-edition quarter.

The U.S. Mint is releasing a slew of coins with rare designs for America’s 250th anniversary, including a newly announced 25-cent piece that gives Americans “a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to discover a piece of history in everyday transactions.”

Only 250,000 of the Semiquincentennial 2026 Declaration of Independence Quarters pictured below will be randomly released into circulation. They’ll sport a “July 4th” privy mark.

“This is more than a coin; it’s a defining moment in our nation’s story,” Mint Director Paul Hollis said in a press release. “We hope Americans enjoy the search for these iconic quarters as they’re meant to be shared, saved, and remembered as part of this historic anniversary.”

The special privy mark will be found to the left of President Thomas Jefferson on the face of the Declaration of Independence Quarters that are being minted this year. On the reverse of these quarters, you’ll see the Liberty Bell, complete with its iconic crack that echoes “the fragility of a young nation at its founding.”

The quarters are being sent to banks and financial institutions throughout the U.S. and will be available before July 4, according to the U.S. Mint.

This is just the latest opportunity for numismatists (those who collect coins and banknotes) to pursue their hobby in 2026.

In addition to the Declaration of Independence Quarter, the U.S. Mint is marking 2026 with special pennies (not for circulation, of course), nickels (missing their usual symbol of peace), dimes, quarters, and half-dollar coins redesigned for America’s 250th anniversary that have been released or will be available soon.

There are more unique pieces that may still be forthcoming, including gold coins depicting President Trump that have been delayed, banknotes with his signature, and $250 bills with his portrait that his administration has reportedly pushed for.

By law, presidents typically can’t appear on coins until two years after their death, but some advocates for a Trump coin think there may be a loophole authorizing the treasury to mint special coins for the nation’s 250th birthday.

Next year, newly minted coins will return to their usual designs.
