Vice President JD Vance hosted Repulican senators for dinner on Wednesday evening following President Trump’s contentious meeting with GOP senators on Capitol Hill earlier in the day.
The vice president’s office confirmed to The Hill that the gathering took place hours after Trump vocally clashed with Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) over the senator’s vote in favor of a war powers resolution on Tuesday that would have called on the administration to withdraw U.S. troops from the war with Iran.
Cassidy told reporters shortly after the meeting that e will not “be bullied into silence,” but later attended a White House Situation Room meeting on Wednesday evening with Vance and Whitkoff about the Iran conflict.
“I want to thank Vice President Vance and Special Envoy Witkoff for the thorough briefing this afternoon on Iran. I appreciate the quick invitation to the White House to address many of my concerns,” Cassidy said in a tweet.
Cassidy and Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) later changed their no votes on the war powers resolution. Cassidy opposed the new resolution, which was nearly identical to the one he had supported a day earlier, while Paul voted “present.”
The Louisiana senator said in an interview with CBS News’ “Face the Nation” that he passed Whtkoff a note requesting a briefing after his shouting match with Trump.
“Steve, I would consider changing my vote, but I’ve been voting yes because I’ve not been briefed,” Cassidy recalled writing to Witkoff. “He said, ‘Call me back in the hour and let’s have a briefing.’ We had it last night.”
