Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has resigned as Labour leader and Andy Burnham has been sworn in as MP for Makerfield.
Speaking outside No 10 this morning, Starmer thanked his wife in an emotional speech, after describing becoming prime minister as the "proudest moment" of his life.
Starmer also said he has spoken to the King and if there is a contest to succeed him, a new Labour leader would be in place before Parliament returns in September.
The former Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, who travelled from Manchester to London to be sworn in as MP today, confirmed he would stand to replace the prime minister.
