The U.S. Secret Service said Thursday it was investigating a member of Vice President Vance’s detail for allegedly leaking sensitive information.
“A member of the Vice Presidential Protective Division is the subject of an administrative investigation, and potential criminal inquiry, involving allegations of compromising operational and information security,” Secret Service Chief of Communications Anthony Guglielmi said in a statement to The Hill.
Guglielmi said the agency will not comment on any specifics about the case but added that “any conduct that potentially threatens the safety of a protectee will not be tolerated.”
The investigation comes one week after an MS NOW story reported on frustrations among Vance’s security detail over sudden and immediate trips and assignments. This included internal concerns “about Vance and his office pressing them for trips and assignments that some agents consider an inappropriate or even unprecedented use of government resources compared to prior vice presidents.”
The agency told the outlet that previous vice presidents “eschewed using such expensive government perks for the convenience of their children’s schedule, and agents typically drove children locally in sports utility vehicles.”
The story cited multiple sources, including unnamed Trump administration officials with knowledge of Vance’s flight plans, schedule and the agents’ “frustration,” particularly over last-minute travel requests from the vice president and second lady Usha Vance.
Current and former Secret Service personnel told MS NOW that such “off-the-record” trips require agents to cancel their own plans, including taking time off, and race to the location where they are needed while also quickly developing security plans.
“The detail is tired of them not giving notice on things and making everything an OTR,” one source familiar with the detail’s frustration told the outlet. “He [Vance] thinks he can still move around like a U.S. Senator.”
Frustration among the agents has resulted in some making custom coins and stickers mocking the vice president and his family’s irregular trips. MS NOW reviewed images with Vance’s Secret Service code name, “Bobcat,” used on coins reading “Bobcat OTR Survivors Club.”
CNN, which first reported the leaked investigation, reported that the agent placed on administrative leave is suspected of being the source for MS NOW’s story.
Similar leaks over the Qatari-gifted jet for Air Force One and security concerns reported in The New York Times prompted the Department of Justice (DOJ) to subpoena four of the outlet’s reporters.
The DOJ previously told The Hill that the reporters “are not the targets, those leaking classified information are.”
“We recognize there may always be natural tension there, but we are not going to ignore the law and stop investigating the people who work in the administration and think it’s OK to leak classified information impacting national security,” the spokesperson said.
