Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) went after New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D) on Thursday, saying the NYC mayor is going to do something “stupid” enough to ‘send him to Gitmo,’ a nickname for Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.

“For some reason, we have enough people in New York that would vote for this guy to run the largest and the most popular city in the world, just goes to show you how close we are to losing our country,” Tuberville, who won the Republican nomination in the Alabama governor’s race earlier this year, told conservative personality Benny Johnson in an interview while discussing Mamdani.

“And — he will, sooner or later, he will do something more stupid than what he’s done, to where we’ll finally say, ‘Enough’s enough,’ go putting handcuffs on him and get him the hell out of here and send him to Gitmo, because the guy hates this country, he wants to change it and that’s not going to happen,” he added

Guantanamo Bay is most famous for being a military base where terror suspects are held. It gained infamy for torture and abuse accusations during the U.S.’s war on terrorism

Earlier this year, Tuberville made a post connecting Mamdani’s Ramadan iftar at City Hall with the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks which received backlash from Democrats. California Gov. Gavin Newsom called the Alabama senator “a racist piece of s—” over the post.

Mamdani, a democratic socialist, stepped into the political spotlight last year with a win in the Democratic primary for New York City mayor over former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo. Within the last year, he has become one of the most prominent faces in the Democratic Party.

In recent months, democratic socialists have racked up electoral victories in places like New York, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and Colorado.

House Republicans have recently made concerns about a creeping communist threat a key part of their case for the midterms, alleging that Democratic candidates furthest to the left are not just self-described democratic socialists, but are pushing for a society based on collective ownership of resources.

The Hill has reached out to Mamdani’s press office for comment.
