(NewsNation) — The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has seized over 300 drones at World Cup events since the tournament kicked off earlier this month.
Drone restrictions are put in place to prevent terror attacks, like the recent attempt to target UFC fights at the White House. Following that event, World Cup security has emphasized drone safety.
“All 78 of the matches in the United States of America have counter-drone mitigation protection, and every fan fest, one fan fest in every single city throughout the duration of the World Cup will have counter-drone mitigation coverage,” Andrew Giuliani, the head of the White House World Cup Task Force, told ABC News.
On matchdays, drones are prohibited within a three-mile radius of stadiums and up to 3,000 feet above them. Similar restrictions cover fan zones.
Last year, President Trump signed an executive order to increase U.S. defenses against drone attacks. Flying a drone in a restricted zone is a federal crime and can result in fines up to $100,000, prison time, and drone confiscation, as TSA wrote on social platform X.
“You’re welcome, drones are not welcome … so don’t fly your drones,” Giuliani said, according to ABC.
