President Trump said Wednesday that progressive Abdul El-Sayed’s win in the Michigan Democratic Senate primary is “great news for the Republican Party.”
“Great news for the Republican Party. El-Sayed, a Communist loser who hates Jews and Israel, is the projected winner in this race with the Socialist,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
“As usual the Polls were way off on this one,” he added, pointing to El-Sayed’s opponent, Rep. Haley Stevens (D-Mich). “She was not expected to do nearly as well as she did. Now, the Dumocrats crazy policies will only get worse!”
The narrow race was called Wednesday morning, and El-Sayed led Stevens by about 1 percentage point.
Stevens, who was backed by the Democratic establishment and moderates, conceded to El-Sayed Wednesday morning. El-Sayed will now face off against former Rep. Mike Rogers (R) in the battleground race that could determine which party clinches Senate control in November.
El-Sayed has been a vocal critic of Israel, calling the actions in Gaza a “genocide.” He has hit Stevens on taking money from groups like the American Israel Public Affairs Committee’s super PAC. Stevens has said she supports a two-state solution but does not view the actions taken in Gaza as a “genocide.”
During his Wednesday victory speech, El-Sayed said he stands in “solidarity” with Jewish voters and that “we can condemn anti-Semitism, and at the same time, we can be talking about how we bring people together, and we can be talking about everybody’s pain.”
“To all of my sisters and brothers of the Jewish faith, or any faith at all, or no faith at all: I want you to know that my commitment to your safety, my commitment to Jewish safety, is the same commitment that I have to the safety of my own daughters,” he said.
