On Tuesday, Republican political commentator Scott Jennings said it would be “proper” for the GOP to find a replacement candidate for Rep. Max Miller (R-Ohio) as his deadline to drop out approaches.
Speaking on “CNN NewsNight,” Jennings was asked about the ongoing situation involving Miller, who opened a House Ethics Committee investigation into himself following major scrutiny from Republicans over abuse and sexual misconduct allegations from past partners.
“It would be proper for the party to get a candidate here who can pay their full attention to representing the people of Ohio,” he said.
Miller’s ex-wife, Emily Moreno, has accused Miller of hurling scalding hot water at her, holding a gun to her head and breaking their daughter’s collarbone. The congressman has vehemently and repeatedly denied the allegations, and sued Moreno for defamation in May.
Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio), Emily Moreno’s father, called for Miller to resign from Congress, saying that he needs “to seek professional help to end the clear pattern of abuse he has left in his wake.”
Miller is also being sued by former White House communications director Stephanie Grisham for violating a nondisclosure agreement not to disparage each other. The agreement was signed after Miller sued Grisham for defamation for publishing an op-ed that alleged an abusive relationship.
Jennings said his advice to Miller was to put his family first.
“The only thing that matters is you have a kid, and this kid needs to have some kind of a functioning family,” he continued about the situation. “And litigating this in the middle of a campaign on national television, day after day, is the opposite of that and it‘s not going to yield the results you want.”
Miller is running for reelection in Ohio’s 7th Congressional District and vowed on Sunday to remain in the race. He said in an interview with Jake Tapper on CNN that President Trump in a phone call told him “it’s going to be a tough race.”
A source familiar with the conversation told The Hill that Trump also informed him to drop out of the race.
“Let this guy go and try to heal himself because he’s obviously a troubled person,” Jennings concluded.
