(NewsNation) — President Donald Trump is set to visit Michigan on Monday to highlight manufacturing and auto industry jobs ahead of the state’s Aug. 4 primary elections.
Trump will speak at General Motors‘ Milford Proving Ground facility in Milford, where the automaker tests new vehicles and emerging technologies. According to GM, the site is the world’s oldest dedicated vehicle testing facility.
The president is expected to focus on the economy, touting his administration’s efforts to rebuild the U.S. auto industry and expand domestic manufacturing.
The White House says the administration has helped secure more than $20 billion in business investments in Michigan, creating more than 1,600 jobs. Officials also point to tariffs on imported vehicles and tax incentives for American-made cars as benefits for the state’s auto sector.
Critics, however, argue the tariffs have increased costs for consumers. Some recent economic analyses estimate Michigan households could face thousands of dollars in additional costs tied to auto tariffs.
Trump’s trip will also include campaign events for Republican candidates ahead of the primary. With the midterm elections 100 days away, Republicans are working to maintain control of Congress.
Michigan voters continue to cite the economy as a top concern.
“The Iran conflict is the biggest risk,” Michigan resident Rina Shah said. “Gas is climbing. Oil is spiking. … And every week, the war drags on without a clean end. It feels like the endless war fatigue that Trump himself once campaigned against. So, looking at Michigan voters, I think they feel that at the pump and in the grocery store.”
Trump has endorsed Rep. John James, R-Mich., and former Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich., in key races. Rogers’ campaign told NewsNation he plans to join the president during Monday’s visit.
