The 13 Amazon Device Deals Actually Worth Snagging This Prime Day
CommentLoaderSave StorySave this storyCommentLoaderSave StorySave this story

Amazon’s Prime Day is back for its fall edition, and Amazon Alexa-powered devices are already on sale. But are the sales actually any good?

There’s already the question of whether you want Alexa in your house, and now it’s whether the sales are a real discount or more of a mind game. That’s thanks to Amazon raising prices across its device categories at the end of August, leaving us with the same product lineup but a worse case for recommending it.

If you’re interested in Amazon’s device sales but want the real picture of what the discount is and which devices are worth it, I’ve got you covered. I’ve been testing Amazon Alexa speakers since they launched in 2012, and I am also WIRED’s resident Kindle expert, which gives me almost too much insight into the price games Amazon plays with these devices. Here’s my full breakdown of all of Amazon's on-sale gadgets and which sales are best, whether it's an Amazon Echo speaker or a Kindle e-reader. Be sure to check out our guide to the Absolute Best Prime Day Deals for more great discounts.

Updated October 7, 3:52 AM ET: We've confirmed all of these deals are still live, and added a new deal on a Fire tablet , as we head into day two of Prime Day.

The Best Amazon Alexa Deals

Not all deals are great, especially given the recent price increases. If you’re set on getting a new Amazon Alexa-powered speaker, though, here are the discounts (and devices themselves!) that are still worth it.

Amazon

Echo Spot (2024)

$110 $55 (50% off)

Amazon

$110 $55 (50% off)

Best Buy

The best deal in Amazon’s early device deals is easily the second-gen Echo Spot, revived in 2024. It’s 50 percent off its new price, and it’s still a solid discount off its original price of $80. I really like this fun little smart speaker. It works great as a bedside alarm, shows when your next alarm is set, and can display the weather or your calendar details when you ask Alexa. Best of all, you get the fun benefits of a screen without a camera to worry about.

Amazon

Echo Studio (2nd Gen)

$220 $180 (18% off)

Amazon

The only new Amazon Alexa speaker that didn’t get hit with a price change is the second-gen Echo Studio. It still sits at $220, which is not only its original price, but also the original price of the first-gen model. It’s a nice thing to see. Its discount isn’t huge for Amazon’s Prime Big Deal Days, but it’s $40 for powerful, room-filling sound that could extend across great rooms without getting muddy.

Echo Show 11

$250 $150 (40% off)

Amazon

Out of Amazon’s new smart displays, the Echo Show 11 is my favorite. It’s a little larger than the Echo Show 8, but not so much that you can’t comfortably fit it onto a kitchen counter. It also has better sound than the newer Echo Show 8. The price rose by $30 at the end of August, but $100 is still a good discount, even if it is off the new price.

Amazon

Echo Dot (5th Gen)

$80 $40 (50% off)

Amazon

If you want an Echo for as cheap as possible, this is the one to get, and this is the best time to buy it. The fifth-generation Echo Dot packs good sound for its size, but is best on sale since I don’t think it’s worth the new $80 price tag it got in August. But $40 is fine, and the cheapest you’ll get for a current model. (Still more than I think it needs to be, though.)

The Best Amazon Kindle Deals

If you’re shopping for a Kindle, this is the best time to buy since most were hit with price increases. You won’t get as good a deal anymore after Amazon raised prices across its e-reader lineup, but it’s much better to buy at a discount off the new price than at full price for the same product.

Just about every older Kindle (specifically the 2024 line) is on sale. Brand-new Kindles were announced just last week, but we don’t expect those to go on sale during this event. Here are the sales I’d recommend checking out.

Kindle Colorsoft

$290 $190 (34% off)

Amazon (Colorsoft)

If you’re already a Kindle user, the only reason I can think you’re shopping Kindle deals right now is to upgrade to color. Everyone’s eyeing the pretty colors that the 2026 Colorsoft will have, but the price tag is hefty for a device that only adds color. If you’re set on a color screen, I think this older model is a smart buy and you can get a case to add the color you’re looking for. While it did raise in price earlier this year, the Colorsoft has one of the best discounts on a Kindle with a full $100 off the retail price.

Kindle Paperwhite and Paperwhite Signature Edition (2024, 12th Generation)

$250 $170 (32% off)

Amazon (Signature)

$200 $150 (25% off)

Amazon

The best all-around Kindle is the Kindle Paperwhite. The 12th-gen version came out in 2024 and is a well-rounded device with an e-paper screen, a front light with both warm and cool tones (which you won’t get on the cheapest model), and a whopping 12 weeks of battery life. I like the raspberry color it comes in if you’re looking for a colorful Kindle. It went up in price, which makes this sale the better time to buy.

Kindle Colorsoft Kids

$300 $210 (30% off)

Amazon

$300 $210 (30% off)

Best Buy

I think kids and kids’ books have a much better chance of taking advantage of the color screen than adults, which is why I love the Kindle Colorsoft Kids if you’re shopping for a young reader. It also comes with a full year of Kids+ content—more than any other Kids model—and the color covers are beautiful. It has a good discount, even though the price did increase by $30 at the end of August.

Amazon

Kindle (2024, 11th Gen)

$150 $104 (31% off)

Amazon

I’m really bummed the base Kindle won’t go on sale for under $100 anymore. Amazon raised the price to $150 in August, and at that point you might as well get the Paperwhite with more features and longer battery life. But it’s still the cheapest Kindle you can get if you’re set on sticking with Amazon’s e-readers and want to spend as little as possible.

Amazon

Kindle Scribe (3rd Generation)

$500 $380 (24% off)

Amazon (32 GB)

$550 $420 (24% off)

Amazon (64 GB)

I usually prefer the older 2024 model due to the price, but the newer third-gen Kindle Scribe is on sale for less than the second-gen model right now, so it’s actually the better buy. You’ll get extra AI features and a new homepage design. Amazon also didn’t raise the price in August, so the discount is better than other Kindles. The Colorsoft version is also on sale if you want a color model.

The Best Fire TV Deals

If you’re shopping for a Fire TV or streaming device, look no further. Here are our favorites from Amazon’s lineup that are also on sale.

Ember Artline TV

$1,100 $800 (27% off)

Amazon (65-inch)

$900 $500 (44% off)

Amazon (55-inch)

The Amazon Ember Artline TV is another rare device from Amazon that didn’t see a price hike at the end of August, with the 65-inch model maintaining the $1,099 price it had at launch (and now has a $400 discount off that). It’s a well-priced art television that is more accessible than its more expensive competitors, and comes with handy features like built-in Alexa+. I’m usually not a fan of the Fire TV devices, but this one keeps catching my eye and is already on sale for Amazon Prime Big Deal Days.

Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Generation)

$85 $45 (47% off)

Amazon

$85 $45 (47% off)

If you’re looking to add Amazon to your existing TV, this is our favorite Amazon-powered streaming stick. It has 16 gigabytes of storage, supports Wi-Fi 6E, and is fast and easy to set up and use. It’s best if you’re an Amazon Prime member, but you’ll still get access to tons of other streaming services without one. It did raise in price in August, but has a nice discount for the sale event.

Best Amazon Eero Deals

If you haven’t already upgraded your home Wi-Fi router with a mesh system, then you’re long overdue. Amazon’s Eero system is one of the most popular for a reason, and Prime Day has a few versions on sale that we like.

Eero Pro 6E

Amazon (3-Pack)

$350 $260 (26% off)

Amazon (2-Pack)

$450 $375 (17% off)

Best Buy (3-Pack)

This system is older, but WIRED reviewer Simon Hill says it still adds speedy 6-GHz bands into your home along with the usual 2.4-GHz and 5-GHz bands. It’s simple to set up, and cheaper than newer systems if you’re looking to save as much as you can. But Eero does have a subscription to look out for to add features like parental controls and a VPN service.

Eero Pro 7

$800 $600 (25% off)

Amazon (3-Pack)

$550 $400 (27% off)

Amazon (2-Pack)

$550 $400 (27% off)

Best Buy (2-Pack)

If you’re looking for the latest and greatest, the Eero Pro 7 is a solid pick to add Wi-Fi 7 to your home network. WIRED reviewer Simon Hill says the tri-band system performs extremely well in busy family homes that are full of devices (I know mine is!) that need bandwidth. You’ll still have to look out for that subscription tier for certain features, though.

Other On-Sale Amazon Devices We’ve Tested

Looking for a different device during Amazon’s sale event? We’ve tested several other Amazon Echo and Fire TV devices that are also on sale right now. Here’s what else you can consider, and what the discount looks like.

  • Amazon Echo Dot Max for $80 ($40 Off): If you’re looking for a small speaker with bigger sound than the older Echo Dot, the Echo Dot Max has impressive sound for its size, plus a built-in smart home hub. Its price did increase by $20, though, so it feels like it’s just $20 off even if it looks like $40.
  • Amazon Echo Show 8 (4th Gen) for $125 ($75 Off): While this model is on sale, I prefer the older Echo Show 8 (though it seems rarely available anymore) and the Echo Show 11 since both have better sound. It’s a good discount, even off the original $180 price tag, but I’d just spend $25 more and get the better Echo Show 11 if you’re set on a new Amazon Alexa-powered smart display.
  • Amazon Echo Show 15 for $250 ($100 Off): The Echo Show 15 and Echo Show 21 are on sale and both double as a Fire TV device, with a massive screen, a flat back for mounting, and an included Alexa Voice Remote. I don’t love the TV experience, but it works, and the homepage fits a ton of widgets if you want to see multiple at once. Both sizes are discounted, but both models also cost more now, so it’s not as good as you’d think for the same device.
  • Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max for $45 ($40 Off): If you love Amazon Prime as your streaming service, this is the favorite we’ve tested of Amazon’s Fire TV streaming devices. It’s not a crazy discount since it went up $25 in August, but it’s still a really affordable streaming stick during this same event.
  • Amazon Kindle Paperwhite Kids for $170 ($60 Off): The Paperwhite Kids has everything we like about a Kindle Paperwhite, but adds a cover to protect it from any drops by your kiddo's hands and comes with six months of Kids+ content, which is like Kindle Unlimited but designed for kids. It’s a good device, but the discount isn’t as good as before; it used to retail for $180, so it’s really only $10 off what it used to cost. But you won’t find it new for cheaper.
  • Amazon Kindle Kids for $123 ($57 Off): This is the cheapest Kindle Kids device, with a 6-inch screen similar to the cheapest Kindle, and it still comes with a colorful cover and six months of Kids+ content like the Paperwhite Kids above. It has the smallest discount out of the Kids devices, and it used to retail for $130, so it’s only $7 off the original price. The other Kids models are a better buy.
  • Amazon Kindle Scribe Colorsoft for $480 ($150 Off): The Kindle Scribe Colorsoft has one of the biggest discounts on an Amazon device for Prime Day, but for the most expensive Kindle ever. While I really like the Kindle Scribe system if you want both an e-reader and a digital notebook, for that price I’d recommend a reMarkable Paper Pro digital notebook, which comes with a ton more features and a color screen. Otherwise, stick with the more affordable Kindle Scribes. It is a much better price right now if you really want those features and color, but it’s hard for me to recommend over other options.
  • Amazon Fire HD 10 for $73 ($82 off): Given the steep discount here, and the timing, I expect Amazon will be updating its tablet line this fall. However, given the price hikes for the rest of the company's products, whatever new Fire tablets are coming will likely be more expensive, which makes this deal more appealing, even if it is potentially outdated tech. The Fire HD 10 is the best of Amazon’s tablets and the one we recommend. It's certainly not the fastest tablet around, but when you can snag it on sale for around $100, it's a good deal. It has the best battery life of any Fire tablet, and a 1080p screen that has a lot of glare, but looks decent when you're watching a movie in the dark. You can even set it up to work like an Echo speaker. Turn on Show Mode and you can query Alexa til your heart's content. Realize this is no iPad, but performance is good enough for browsing the web and watching movies.

Which Amazon Device Prices Went Up?

Amazon raised prices across several of its device categories at the end of August. It’s not a shocking move, but it hit many affordable products and makes for a worse sale season since we’re getting discounts on a higher price tag for no other improvements. Here’s a quick breakdown of most of the price changes to help you navigate what sales are good and which are really just bringing you back to the old price.

Either way, I’d only buy an Amazon device on sale now, but it is unfortunate that the sales just won’t be as good anymore on these existing devices. I expect most, if not all, of these devices to go on sale at some point during Amazon Prime Big Deal Days.
