Support for capitalism among Americans has dropped within the past 10 years, according to a new survey.
In the poll, released Wednesday by The Wall Street Journal and NORC Research Center, 48 percent of respondents said American capitalism is functioning “very well” or “somewhat well,” while 51 percent said it is functioning “not too well” or “not at all well.” According to the Journal, about 37 percent of respondents in 2015 said it was not functioning well at all.
The results come as the democratic socialist movement has seen momentum after key wins in primaries in New York, Colorado, Washington and California in the past year.
Another 52 percent of respondents leaned toward the belief that power held by corporations and business owners harms consumers and workers and that the “government should do more to limit the influence of corporations.”
Roughly 45 percent leaned toward the belief that “America is successful because of its respect for free markets” and “when governments interfere with businesses, or seek to own private companies, they make America weaker,” according to the poll.
A separate survey from The Economist/YouGov released late last month found that nearly 1 in 3 Americans said they would be willing to back a democratic socialist in an election.
The sentiment also comes as voters voice heightened concerns around affordability and as President Trump’s approval rating has declined. According to Decision Desk HQ’s average of polls, the president has an approval rating of 41.4 percent as of midday Thursday, with his disapproval rating at 55 percent.
The Journal/NORC poll was conducted from June 11-18 among 1,862 U.S. voters. It has a margin of error of 3.44 percentage points.
