Stephen A. Smith said Wednesday the death of 18-year-old Nolan Wells “resonates particularly in the Black community.”
The political and sports commentator said to NewsNation’s Chris Cuomo Wednesday that the circumstances and lack of answers surrounding the case are “highly suspicious.”
The conversation started when Cuomo asked why this case has struck a chord, involving prominent civil rights figures like attorney Benjamin Crump and Rev. Al Sharpton.
“There was a Black dude who was the only Black dude in attendance and he’s the only person, the human being that didn’t come home alive,” Smith said.
Wells’s death is currently under investigation after he was found dead following a July 4 boating trip with his friends off the coast of Mississippi. His family reported him missing on Independence Day around 11 p.m. after a call from Wells’s friend.
Photos have appeared to show Wells as the only Black person in attendance; however, it is still unconfirmed.
The family of the teen commissioned an independent autopsy in Washington, D.C., where Crump announced during the NAACP Convention on Wednesday that preliminary results said the death was “undetermined” and pending a further investigation.
“The bottom line is, is that if you sent your son out and they go on a boat trip with these guys, and he’s the only one that doesn’t come back alive, and he’s the only Black individual that was there, you better believe that the Black community is going to be up in arms,” he added.
