New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill (D) unveiled an initial wave of endorsements on Thursday for congressional Democratic candidates with military or national security backgrounds as the Democratic Party looks to ramp up support ahead of the midterm elections.
Sherrill’s federal political action committee, “Mission to Deliver,” backed 13 Democratic campaigns this week. This marks the centrist Democrat’s first wave of midterm endorsements since she won Virginia’s gubernatorial race last year.
The Democratic governor’s PAC backed Massachusetts Rep. Seth Moulton (D) in his bid against incumbent Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.). Moulton wrote in a social media post on Thursday that he was “deeply honored” by this endorsement.
“Grateful for her support and partnerships as we build a stronger, more united America together!” the Democratic representative wrote.
The other endorsements cover Democrats running for the U.S. House, including JoAnna Mendoza for Arizona’s 6th Congressional District, Eileen Laubacher for Colorado’s 4th Congressional District, Jessica Kilin for Colorado’s 5th Congressional District, Bale Dalton for Florida’s 7th Congressional District, Zach Dembo for Kentucky’s 6th Congressional District and Don Davis for North Carolina’s 1st Congressional District.
The hybrid PAC also endorsed Maura Sullivan for New Hampshire’s 1st Congressional District, Maggie Goodlander for New Hampshire’s 2nd Congressional District, Rebecca Bennett for New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District, Cait Conley for New York’s 17th Congressional District, Nancy Lacore for South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District and Elaine Luria for Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District.
Sherrill ran on her experience as a Navy veteran and time serving in the U.S. House in her bid for Virginia’s top executive role, and her victory in this competitive race raised Democrats’ hopes for their chances in the midterm elections.
The Democratic governor launched “Mission to Deliver” earlier this year. In a private call with donors ahead of the hybrid PAC’s debut reported by Axios, Sherrill said she would back candidates who were focused on lowering costs and public service.
Sherrill emphasized these candidates’ military and national security service in a Thursday statement released alongside her PAC’s endorsements.
“Each one of these candidates has taken multiple oaths to the U.S. Constitution. They know what it means to serve others and accomplish the mission, whatever it takes,” the governor said.
“I know from working with fellow servicemembers when I was in Congress that when we send veterans to Washington, we are sending in dedicated public servants who are trained to run towards the fight and are unafraid to take on the status quo,” Sherrill continued. “They will stand up to a president who ran away from service, who sends our troops into harm’s way for a war he shouldn’t have gotten into and can’t get out of, and drives up costs for the American people while he uses public office to enrich himself, his family, and his cronies.”
