(NewsNation) — The mayor of San Antonio does not want Kanye West performing in her city.
Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones took to social media, calling for a July 4 concert featuring the artist, now known as Ye, to be canceled over the rapper’s past antisemitic statements.
“I support canceling the Ye concert,” Jones wrote on social platform X. “Military City USA should not host someone with a record of hate speech and antisemitic comments in a city-funded facility like our Alamodome—not ever, and certainly not on July 4th, our Nation’s 250th birthday.”
She added, “Standing up to antisemitism is exactly what it takes to achieve a more perfect Union.”
European and UK governments ban Ye
Jones’ remarks come as European leaders have banned or pushed back against the “Power” rapper from performing in their countries.
In April, the U.K. government banned Ye from entering the country to perform at the Wireless Festival in London this summer after political blowback.
The rapper’s visa was revoked by the U.K.’s Electronic Travel Authorisation on the basis that his presence in the country would not be helpful to the public good, according to The Guardian.
The festival issued refunds to ticket holders. He was scheduled to perform to a crowd of 150,000 for three nights.
The rapper also postponed a show in Marseille, France, in April after French officials announced they were seeking to ban him, The Associated Press reported.
“After much thought and consideration, it is my sole decision to postpone my show in Marseille, France, until further notice,” he said on X at the time. “I know it takes time to understand the sincerity of my commitment to make amends.”
Despite Ye writing antisemitic comments, such as “death con 3 On JEWISH PEOPLE” online, praising Adolf Hitler, releasing a song called “Heil Hitler” and selling merchandise featuring the swastika, his fans said they’re able to separate the art from the artist; not everyone has rejected the “Bully” rapper.
He performed in front of 40,000 people in the Netherlands earlier this month, despite protestors outside the GelreDome stadium in Arnhem condemning him for his past antisemitic behavior, according to The New York Times.
