President Trump on Sunday said the regional grocer, Giant Eagle, would lower prices on “more than” 300 products as he seeks to settle concerns regarding affordability.
“I have just been informed that Giant Eagle, a GREAT American Grocery Company, will be lowering Prices, by a lot, across more than 300 products this Summer, through Labor Day, to help hardworking American families,” the president wrote in a Sunday Truth Social post.
“Giant Eagle, like Walmart, is stepping up in a big and bold way to answer my call to lower costs for working families,” he added.
On July 9, the grocer lowered prices on a range of products, like beef and American cheese, with the goal of increasing value perception for customers. The efforts follow a seasonal initiate implemented last fall.
Earlier this month, Walmart and Sam’s Club announced nationwide price cuts on thousands of grocery items and deals on popular foods like ground beef, produce, snacks and soft drinks.
The move comes as the second Trump administration faces concerns about the rise in cost for food, gas and oil.
A recent survey conducted by the Harris Poll found that 95 percent of Americans say the country is in an affordability crisis.
A separate poll from CNN found that 77 percent of U.S. citizens blame Trump for the rise in consumer costs.
On Sunday, the president commended Giant Eagle for dropping retail prices and urged more companies to follow suit.
“Other Grocery Chains must immediately follow the lead of these absolute Patriots at Giant Eagle and Walmart,” Trump’s Truth Social post said.
Giant Eagle has stores in northern Ohio, western Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland and Indiana.
Kroger announced that it would acquire the grocer on July 1 at a purchase price of $1.65 billion with the transaction expected to close in 2027 if approved by regulatory agencies.
