President Trump slapped an additional 50 percent tariff on certain Canadian goods in response to what the administration said were “discriminatory” trade measures from Canada on Monday.
A senior administration official told reporters on a Monday press call that the impacted products range from “wine to hockey sticks to cement.”
The tariffs fall under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930 and will go into effect 30 days after signing, an administration official told reporters.
“Over the past year, Canada has retained substantial retaliation against the United States as the U.S. imposes trade actions to reindustrialize, reshore, and support its manufacturing,” the senior administration official said. “Specifically Canada has to be held accountable for this continued discrimination.”
They noted that Trump signed three separate Section 338 actions, including one related Canadian discrimination to U.S. motor vehicles, dairy and alcohol products.
The tariffs apply to all covered goods regardless of whether a good originates under the U.S. Canada Mexico Agreement.
The announcement comes after Trump threatened to slap tariffs on Canada over the country’s handling of wildfires that have caused smoke-filled air to spread throughout the U.S.
Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke with each other at the World Cup Finals in New Jersey on Sunday, but the senior administration official said they did not discuss tariffs.
“Although the president and the prime minister met and they had a one on one, it was not a visit to talk about trade and tariffs from our perspective,” the official said.
They noted on the call to reporters that Monday’s tariffs were not related to the wildfires, but that Trump has been given options on the wildfire tariffs.
Canada is currently paying a 25 percent tariff on steel and aluminum products, a 10 percent tariff on all Canadian softwood timber and lumber imports in addition to a 12.5 percent tariff for forced labor-related, which was implemented last month.
