Clockwise from top left: 'Sweet Magnolias,' 'I Am Frankelda,' 'Little Brother,' 'In the Hand of Dante,' 'I Will Find You' and 'Avatar: The Last Airbender.' Netflix Despite the flashy big budget, high concept fare, the real backbone of Netflix is the unassuming dramas like Virgin River, Sullivan’s Crossing and Ginny & Georgia that it churns out at an impressive clip. Add to that list Sweet Magnolias, romantic drama that returns for its fifth season on June 11. An adaptation of Sherryl Woods’ novels, the show follows three women, best friends living in South Carolina, and their struggles, romances and more. It’s not overly complex, and that’s just the way Sweet Magnolias heads like it.
June 12 sees the debut of Arturo and Roy Ambriz’s I Am Frankelda, an innovative Mexican stop-motion animated musical feature that has a real chance of being a breakout hit for Netflix this month. The film is a prequel to the television series Frankelda’s Book of Spooks, and has been generating a lot of buzz on social media for being the first Mexican movie made entirely in stop-motion animation. If you’re wondering what that is, just think of something akin to Wallace and Gromit. The dark fantasy story is about a young 19th century Mexican horror writer named Francisca Imelda who writes about an imagined world, which just so happens to be real.

The ever prolific Harlan Coben, the scribe behind the mega hits Safe, Fool Me Once, Run Away and The Stranger, returns to Netflix on June 18 with yet another fast-paced thriller miniseries, this time not shot in some hard to fathom British city, indeed it is the first Netflix Coben show that is ostensibly set in America. I Will Find You, based on Coben’s 2023 novel of the same name, features an impressive cast, including Sam Worthington, Britt Lower, Milo Ventimiglia, and Erin Richards and tells the story of a man (Worthington) who has been wrongfully imprisoned for the murder of his son, but then finds out his son might actually still be alive! Go get ’em Sam!
On June 25, the second season of the big-budget fantasy series Avatar: The Last Airbender hits Netflix. The live-action adaptation of the incredibly popular Nickelodeon animated series sees the Aang gang continue their adventures in the world where some people are able to literally bend the elements to their will. Though reviews for the first season were mixed, Netflix felt sufficiently happy with the ratings that it renewed the obviously very expensive show for a second and third season. The core cast, of course, return, with new additions including Miya Cech as Toph Beifong, Chin Han as Long Feng, Hoa Xuande as Professor Zei, Justin Chien as Earth King Kuei, Amanda Zhou as Joo Dee, Crystal Yu as Poppy Beifong, Madison Hu as Fei and Dichen Lachman as Avatar Yangchen.
THR would hesitate to call Matt Spicer’s Little Brother as Netflix’s big original film release in June, but, honestly, it is likely to get the most views. The comedy, which debuts on June 26, stars the always great Eric Andre and the genuinely funny John Cena in an odd couple type situation playing off the Big Brother-Little Brother program. Cena plays a buttoned up realtor who has his life upended by his truly unhinged “little brother.” It’s not Truffaut, but it’s enough.
Movies added to Netflix in June include Song Sung Blue, Bee Movie, The Big Lebowski, The Chronicles of Riddick, Cinderella Man, Creed, Creed II, Creed III, Father of the Bride, Father of the Bride: Part II, The Fault in Our Stars, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Fried Green Tomatoes, The Girl on the Train, The Hand that Rocks the Cradle, Hot Summer Nights, House on Haunted Hill, Identity Thief, Inside Man, Inside Man: Most Wanted, The Karate Kid, The Karate Kid, The Karate Kid Part II, The Karate Kid Part III, Little Miss Sunshine, Made of Honor, Miracle, Muriel’s Wedding, My Best Friend’s Wedding, Out of Africa, Pitch Black, Rachel Getting Married, Riddick, Rocky, Rocky Balboa, Rocky III, Rocky IV, Rocky V, Rookie of the Year, Rudy, Runaway Bride, Scooby-Doo, Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, Tyler Perry’s The Family That Preys, The Wedding Date and The Wedding Planner.
