Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday that if Iran attacks Israel directly or indirectly, it would make for a “terrible mistake.”
“I should say it very, very clearly,” Netanyahu told Fox News’s Maria Bartiromo in a “Sunday Morning Futures” interview. “If Iran attacks Israel, either directly or through proxies, either with ballistic missiles or UAVs or killer drones, it will make a terrible mistake. Because our response, Israel’s response, will be very, very forceful.”
The Israeli prime minister’s comments come after a recent uptick in hostilities between the U.S. and Iran following the collapse of the memorandum of understanding between the two countries. President Trump has reportedly considered a “massive” attack on Iran and a potential return to major military operations, but also told reporters on Friday that the U.S. is still talking with Iranian officials.
The U.S. and Iran militaries, however, did not exchange fire overnight Saturday, which broke a 13-day streak of tit-for-tat strikes over alleged violations of the ceasefire agreement.
Netanyahu is planning to meet with Trump at the White House this coming week amid the simmering tensions. The prime minister will also attend the funeral of late Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), who was a staunch supporter of Israel and leading advocate for confronting Iran.
Asked by Bartiromo about the meeting and any “fresh, new intelligence” he is planning to present to Trump about Iran’s nuclear program, Netanyahu said the U.S. and Israel “constantly exchange information.”
“It’s not that I’m going to present new information, but I think it’s a good thing to have the opportunity to sit with our good friend, President Trump, and to hear what he has in mind because I think, in many ways, it’s his decision,” the Israeli leader said Sunday.
The New York Times reported this weekend that Trump has at least temporarily set aside plans to sharply escalate the conflict with Iran, with particular concern that intensifying the war could drain the U.S. military’s munitions stockpiles.
