(NEXSTAR) – Nearly 1.6 million white and brown eggs have been recalled over possible contamination, according to a voluntary recall notice shared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Specifically, the recall notice from Midwest Poultry Services explains the eggs may be contaminated with the bacterium salmonella enteritidis.
Contaminated eggs can appear normal, but when raw or undercooked, they can lead to illness. Officials in Pennsylvania say the bacterium can appear in the eggs if the hen has been infected.
Impacted by this recall are 1,589,577 cartons of white eggs and brown cage-free eggs. They were produced between June 6 and July 3 of this year, and bear sell by or best by dates between July 20, 2026, and August 17, 2026.
The eggs were shipped to multiple locations:
- Foodservice and retail customers in Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana
- Kroger stores in Texas and Louisiana
- Brookshire Grocery stores in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, and Mississippi
According to the recall, the eggs were also available at “other smaller retail outlets.”

What to know about the salmonella infections
Salmonella infections are commonly associated with diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps, according to the CDC. Symptoms can begin between six hours and six days after you’ve ingested the bacteria. Most people are able to recover without receiving treatment within four to seven days.
Illnesses may be more severe for young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Some may require medical treatment or hospitalization, the CDC explains.
More severe illness linked to salmonella can include arterial infections, endocarditis (an infection in the heart), and arthritis.
Every year, salmonella causes roughly 1.35 million illnesses and 420 deaths.
