New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D) said voters showed they were exhausted with “status quo politics” by backing democratic socialists in New York state and federal primaries on Tuesday.

Three Mamdani-backed candidates won their Democratic primaries for seats in the House and six New York State Assembly spots this week, with most ousting incumbent leaders.

The mayor said the House campaigns led by former city Comptroller Brad Lander, state Rep. Claire Valdez (D) and Darializa Avila Chevalier show signs of change.

“I think what you’ve seen from New Yorkers, whether it’s in Brad’s race, Darializa’s race, or Claire’s race, is an exhaustion with status quo politics and a desire for something that actually responds to the needs that they have in their own districts,” Mamdani said Wednesday during an appearance on MS NOW’s “All In With Chris Hayes.”

Lander and Avila Chevalier bested incumbent Democratic Reps. Dan Goldman and Adriano Espaillat in the Empire State’s 10th and 13th Congressional Districts, respectively.

Mamdani said their messaging focused on affordability and the working class, as well as bucking the Trump administration’s war in Iran.

“At the same time as we’re greenlighting tens of billions of dollars for Netanyahu’s wars, we’re being told, ‘Sorry, we just can’t help you make it a little bit easier to afford your rent check or your groceries or your childcare or even your public transit,’” the mayor continued, referring to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

“And I think that what we saw is that New Yorkers were fed up with a status quo of our politics, where we’re stuck explaining why this is the best we’re going to have, as opposed to advocating for the working person who’s being left behind by that same status quo,” he added.

Some establishment Democrats have said the effort to elect democratic socialists was a blow to party norms and noted that the recent wave of wins in New York would not be repeated across the country in midterm elections.

“The effort to nationalize New York is going to fail,” Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) told The Associated Press. “What’s happening in New York will be really irrelevant by the time of the elections in November.”

Rep. Marc Veasey (D-Texas) told the AP, “No one in DSA [Democratic Socialists of America] is trying to win in a red-to-blue seat, or in a tough general election match-up.”

However, Rep. Summer Lee (D-Pa.) urged party members to give the winners a chance.

“What I would like to see, and what I think would be actually productive and beneficial, is a congratulations to these people, a commitment to welcome them in, to understanding the perspectives that they bring,” Lee told the newswire.
