Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) on Monday said President Trump will not veto the bipartisan housing bill after cancelling plans to sign the legislation last week.
Johnson met with the president at the White House for two hours on Monday, urging him to sign the measure that aims to ensure more access to affordable housing nationwide.
“He said he’ll think about it, and we’ll talk about it again this week,” the House Speaker told USA Today.
“He won’t veto the bill. We already know that. He’ll either allow it to just go into law, or he’ll put his signature on it and take partial ownership, and I hope he does the latter,” he added.
The landmark bipartisan housing bill entitled the 21st Century Road to Housing Act passed in both chambers with veto-proof margins. The bill boosts housing supply, streamlines construction regulations and curbs large corporate purchases of single-family homes.
Lawmakers ushered the legislation in a supermajority vote of 358-32, securing approval from two-thirds of the legislature in both the House and the Senate.
If Trump chooses not to sign the bill enacting it into law immediately, it will automatically become law after 10 days of no presidential action.
“He has, as you know, 10 days to make that determination. His point that he’s been trying to make is that the SAVE America Act is his top priority, and it is mine, as well. But I said, ‘Mr. President, we can walk and chew gum at the same time,'” Johnson told USA Today.
“The housing bill has a lot of great policy, a lot of important things that he and I both promised to the voters,” he added.
On Monday, Trump said the housing bill just a “yawn” but said the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE America) Act was about “saving America.”
The SAVE America Act would require proof of citizenship and photo ID for voter registration.
Hardline conservatives in the House have attempted to stall legislative business to ensure that the SAVE America Act passes as soon as possible, despite serious objections from the Senate.
Johnson said efforts to stall business in the lower chamber are “self-defeating,” and Trump urged his counterparts in the House to stop “grandstanding” while at the same time chastising the Senate for not making strides towards swiftly approving the legislation.
The Speaker has proposed tacking the SAVE America Act onto the National Defense Authorization Act, a sweeping package enacted annually by Congress to specify the budget, expenditures and operational policies for the Department of Defense and Department of Energy’s nuclear programs.
