Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has warned of an Iranian response if the U.S. and Israel breach the interim peace deal, as Tehran prepares to bury its former supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
“We strongly demand full implementation of the agreements, and if the US and the Zionist regime fail to fulfill their commitments, Iran will resume proportionate actions,” Ghalibaf said Friday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency, during a meeting with Belarusian lawmaker Igor Sergeyenko.
Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi have been the lead Iranian negotiators in high-level talks with the U.S. to finalize an agreement that would permanently end hostilities in the region, fully reopen the critical Strait of Hormuz and resolve outstanding issues on Tehran’s nuclear program, among other objectives.
The renewed tension comes after the U.S. and Iran exchanged fire in the Gulf last week in the first flare-up of fighting since the 60-day memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed.
President Trump threatened late last weekend to “militarily complete the job” following suspected Iranian drone attacks on vessels attempting to transit the oil corridor. The U.S. military responded with retaliatory strikes on Iranian missile and drone storage sites and coastal radar locations.
But a U.S. official told The Hill on Sunday that both sides had agreed to “stand down for now” and allow ships to pass freely through the strait. Technical talks on the MOU would continue, they said.
Ghalibaf also said that the U.S. could not militarily confront Tehran and cast Israeli threats as “baseless propaganda,” according to ISNA.
“The United States and the Zionist regime did not achieve any of their goals in the Ramadan War, and today everyone has come to the conclusion that the military action against Iran has failed and, ultimately, they requested a ceasefire themselves,” he reportedly said.
The New York Times reported Thursday that U.S. officials believe there may have been an Israeli plot to assassinate Iran’s lead negotiators during earlier talks this spring on an interim ceasefire deal, citing current and former American officials.
Israeli strikes took out several of Iran’s top military and political leaders during the early weeks of the war, including Ali Larijani, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council and Gholamreza Soleimani, the commander of Iran’s Basij paramilitary force.
Khamenei was also killed in targeted strikes on his compound on the first day of the joint U.S.-Israel military operation and will be buried on July 9 following week-long funeral ceremonies.
