The House Ethics Committee announced Monday that it is investigating Rep. Lance Gooden (R-Texas), though it did not disclose the nature of the probe.
The panel said in a statement that it had received a referral from the Office of Congressional Conduct (OCC) on the matter regarding Gooden.
“The Committee notes that the mere fact of a referral or an extension, and the mandatory disclosure of such an extension and the name of the subject of the matter, does not itself indicate that any violation has occurred, or reflect any judgment on behalf of the Committee,” the statement said.
The panel added it will announce its course of action on or before Nov. 9.
Gooden told Fox News, “These are bogus spending allegations perpetrated by dishonest unelected OCC bureaucrats, and as the fifth Texas GOP ally of the President to endure one of these attacks, I am confident the House Ethics Committee will confirm their baseless nature.”
The Hill reached out to Gooden’s office for further details.
The Campaign Legal Center filed a complaint to the Office of Congressional Ethics in 2021, alleging that Gooden violated House rules and the Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge Act. The group wrote that Gooden appeared “to have purchased 12 assets with a total value ranging from approximately $60,019 and $376,000 without disclosing the transactions” in 2020.
It is unclear whether the Ethics Committee investigation is related to the complaint.
