Universal Pictures announced Monday that the name of the previously untitled feature is The Comeback King. Hitting theaters Feb. 5, 2027, the film features Powell as a country western star in free fall.
Cristin Milioti, Madelyn Cline, Stavros Halkias and Li Jin Hao round out the cast. Apatow helms the movie from a script he wrote with Powell.
Powell took to Instagram to share the image revealing the title and added the caption, “Turn it up. Feb 2027.”

Apatow produces for Apatow Productions through its long-standing overall deal with the studio, while Powell and Dan Cohen produce for Barnstorm via the first-look deal with Universal that was signed last year. Former Universal president of production Kevin Misher also produces for Misher Films. Barry Mendel and Josh Church will executive produce.

Powell’s relationship with Universal kicked off with 2024’s Twisters, as the natural disaster film surpassed $267 million at the domestic box office. The actor voices Fox McCloud in the current Universal animated hit The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, alongside a voice cast that includes Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, Jack Black and Anya Taylor-Joy.
The star’s other recent credits include the features How to Make a Killing and The Running Man, in addition to returning as the title role in the forthcoming second season of Hulu’s Chad Powers.
Apatow’s previous feature credits as director include Netflix’s 2022 film The Bubble, along with such titles for Universal as The King of Staten Island, Knocked Up and The 40-Year-Old Virgin.
