A number of Fox News pundits are urging President Trump to deescalate fighting with Iran, warning the conflict could be a liability for Republican candidates in upcoming elections.
“With the midterm elections a little more than 100 days away, the clock is ticking for President Trump to get out of this war before voters head to the polls. It’s making a lot of Republicans nervous. It’s already, as we know, unpopular,” prime time host Laura Ingraham said during her show on the network this week. “Republicans cannot let this become an endless distraction, especially if they want to win in November.”
Brit Hume, one of the channel’s top political analysts, echoed Ingraham’s concerns, drawing attention specifically to the growing number of U.S. service members who have been killed or injured in connection with the conflict.
“I mean, we’re seeing some casualties now. Now, in military terms, these are not large casualties, but nonetheless they are politically very important and very sensitive matters as they always have been,” Hume said. “So, I think the president’s in kind of a tough spot here in that sense. And he promised to keep us out of endless wars or unsatisfactory wars, and now he’s in one, and it’s not at all clear how it’s gonna end.”
Trump, Hume said, is “vulnerable on this point, and in political terms, he does need to get this over with.”
“But what he may need is time, and he doesn’t have a lot of time,” the commentator added.
Both Ingraham and Hume’s comments were first highlighted by Mediaite.
The president has vowed to respond to Iran’s recent attacks on U.S. assets and interests in the Strait of Hormuz and elsewhere across the Middle East.
Fox is home to a roster of hosts and pundits who are largely supportive of the president, some of whom have defended his strategy in the Middle East.
The network is owned by billionaire conservative media mogul Rupert Murdoch, who also owns the Wall Street Journal, which has published a number of editorials in recent weeks criticizing the war.
Trump’s Secretary of War Pete Hegseth is a former morning show host at Fox. The administration has repeatedly criticized media coverage of the war, arguing it has been overly critical of the president and has not done enough to highlight damage the U.S. has done to Iranian military capabilities.
