Alan Dershowitz, a former defense attorney for late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, will appear before the House Oversight Committee on July 20 for a transcribed interview, according to two sources familiar with the planning.
Dershowitz helped secure a controversial plea deal for Epstein in 2008, in which the disgraced financier agreed to plead guilty to two Florida state prostitution charges in exchange for immunity from federal sex-trafficking charges. He served 13 months in prison.
Epstein victim Virginia Giuffre had accused Epstein of trafficking her to Dershowitz, which Dershowitz had denied; she later recanted the accusation as part of a settlement.
Dershowitz has denied any wrongdoing in connection with Epstein’s crimes.
House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) had previously requested that Dershowitz sit for an in-person, videotaped interview in Washington, D.C., as part of the panel’s ongoing investigation into Epstein.
“Due to public reporting, documents released by the Department of Justice, documents obtained by the Committee, and your former role as Mr. Epstein’s attorney, the Committee believes you have information that will assist in its investigation,” Comer wrote in a letter to Dershowitz.
Dershowitz said during a phone call with The Hill’s sister network NewsNation earlier this month that he wanted “complete transparency” and is prepared “to testify about everything.”
“I offered to testify, volunteered for the past few months. I will personally not invoke privilege. I have nothing to hide. I hope they have videos of Epstein’s rooms … bedrooms. I’m willing to testify truthfully about Les Wexner. All of it,” Dershowitz said, referring to the billionaire and Epstein’s former financial manager.
Other high-profile figures have also appeared before the House Oversight Committee in the Epstein probe, including former President Bill Clinton, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and billionaire Bill Gates.
Sophie Brams and Ryan Mancini contributed to this report.
