Vice President Vance said on Monday that Iran will allow nuclear inspectors back into its country as negotiations between Washington and Iran continue to end the conflict in the Middle East.

Iran has not confirmed the arrangement.

“Letting in the inspectors is a big deal,” Vance told reporters, referring to the United Nations’ International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) experts. “But again, we’re going to see what they actually let the inspectors do once they’re in the country. That’s going to continually be a part of our negotiation.”

“So my point is not that I trust or distrust anybody,” the vice president said. “My point is that I trust actions and what the president has asked us to do is verify what they’re doing, focus less on what they’re saying.”

Vance said the IAEA inspectors, who have performed inspections for years under the Obama administration-negotiated JPCOA nuclear deal, are expected to restart their work as early as this week.

The U.S. and Israeli militaries struck Iran’s three premier nuclear sites last summer. The IAEA’s inspectors last visited Tehran’s nuclear-enrichment facilities prior to the bombing.

Iran’s parliament passed a law last year that curtailed the country’s cooperation with the IAEA and ended inspections.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said in comments reported by Islamic Republic News Agency that Tehran has not taken on new commitments. The outlet reported, citing anonymous officials, that Iran’s nuclear program was not discussed during the first round of direct talks in Switzerland.

Vance said notable progress was made during negotiations between U.S. and Iranian officials.

“Yesterday was a very, very good day. We made a lot of good progress. We did exactly what we wanted to do,” the vice president said.

Vance pointed to four points of accomplishment during the talks, including the establishment of mechanisms to demine the Strait of Hormuz and the process for the technical negotiations.
