Tyler Robinson, the man accused of killing conservative activist Charlie Kirk, targeted Kirk for his political beliefs on LGBTQ issues, prosecutors alleged Tuesday.
Kirk was outspoken about his opposition to same-sex marriage and transgender people, which prosecutors said drove Robinson to target the commentator for his “political expression.”
“The circumstantial evidence that Defendant targeted Mr. Kirk because of Defendant’s belief or perception of Mr. Kirk’s political beliefs is overwhelming,” prosecutors stated in their written arguments.
Kirk, a friend of President Trump, was fatally shot Sept. 10, 2025, during a speech at Utah Valley University.
Following the shooting, investigators narrowed in on a rooftop 160 yards away from Kirk as the source of the gunfire. This rooftop is where prosecutors showed surveillance footage depicting a man in dark clothing whom prosecutors identified as Robinson.
Prosecutors say Robinson’s motive was revealed in an alleged letter he wrote and left under a keyboard for his roommate, Lance Twiggs, to find. The letter, which was cited by prosecutors when initial charges were filed against Robinson, read, “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and I’m going to take it.”
In another communication between Robinson and Twiggs that was cited by prosecutors, Robinson allegedly said, “I had enough of his hatred. Some hate can’t be negotiated out. If I am able to grab my rifle unseen, I will have left no evidence.”
In April, in an interview with prosecutors that touched on the letter, Twiggs stated that Robinson had never discussed Kirk or LGBTQ issues prior to the shooting.
Robinson’s lawyer Richard Novak said in court on July 9 that the letter did not state his client’s opposition to Kirk’s views or his state of mind during that period.
Robinson has not entered a plea at this time and remains in police custody.
The defense has until Aug. 18 to file written arguments on insufficient evidence claims for the trial. Utah District Judge Tony Graf will hold a hearing on Sept. 1.
