Nearly half of Americans can’t explain the One Big Beautiful Bill Act that President Trump signed into law last summer, according to a new poll from Politico.

In the Politico poll, 49 percent of respondents said that they either “have not heard of” the legislation or “have heard of it, but could not explain what it is.” Another 27 percent said they “could explain some elements of” the bill and 11 percent said they can explain it “in detail.” Thirteen percent said they were unsure of their knowledge of the bill.

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act has been weaponized by Democrats in their fight for victory in the midterms. The massive reconciliation bill has been used by Democratic candidates in competitive Senate races, where they slam their Republican opponents for their support of the package.

The legislation was controversial even among Republicans due to the forecasted losses of Medicaid and food aid for Americans because of cuts to those programs. Multiple Republicans warned of political problems resulting from hundreds of thousands of constituents losing the benefits.

“We made promises, and it’s really promises made, promises kept, and we’ve kept them,” Trump said on the day of the bill’s signing, Independence Day 2025. “This is a triumph of democracy on the birthday of democracy. And I have to say, the people are happy.”

In the poll, 32 percent said that their financial situation has been either “worsened” significantly or “a little” by the One Big Beautiful Bill, while 24 percent said the legislation has had “no impact either way.” Twenty-two percent said the legislation has “improved” their financial situation either “a lot” or “a little.”

The Politico poll took place from July 13-15, featuring 2,061 people with a 2.16 percentage point margin of error.
