Zach Cregger has another hit on his hands with Resident Evil, the latest adaptation of the long-running video game series. The film has become a box office success — perhaps unsurprisingly, given its popular source material. But it was also a critical hit, earning the best reviews of the franchise thanks to the sure hands of Cregger and a knockout performance from Austin Abrams.
The Sony film will likely scare its way through theaters for a while before eventually coming to streaming, but fans of physical media can already preorder the Blu-ray edition of the film. In addition to the standard Blu-ray, there are product listings for a 4K Steelbook and a DVD.

A release date has not been announced. Sony has unsurprisingly not announced a VOD or streaming date for Resident Evil either, but the film will eventually land on Netflix, which has an exclusive deal with the studio.
Resident Evil follows Austin Abrams’ Bryan, a medical courier who has to deliver a time-sensitive package. His night goes from bad to worse as he heads into the heart of Raccoon City, which is contending with a slight zombie problem. The film, which blends gnarly body horror with some surprising comedic beats, is a completely new adaptation of the video games, separate from the previous Milla Jovovich-starring films.
And while there are familiar locations and nods to the games throughout, the Zach Cregger film doesn’t require any previous knowledge of the video game franchise. “[Cregger’s] Resident Evil is, hands down, one of the single best video-game screen adaptations to date, yet works in a way that doesn’t feel like an adaptation, doesn’t rely on fan service and Easter-egg hunts to pay homage, and doesn’t skimp on the dynamics that made the game so endlessly playable,” wrote David Fear in Rolling Stone’s review.
