South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson (R) is projected to win the primary runoff for the GOP’s gubernatorial nomination, according to Decision Desk HQ, putting him on a clear path to victory in November.
Wilson on Tuesday defeated South Carolina Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette (R), who finished first in the crowded June 9 primary with President Trump’s endorsement. But Evette’s standing appeared to weaken in the last two weeks, helping Wilson emerge as the runoff favorite and prompting Trump to issue a rare dual endorsement of both candidates in the days before the runoff.
“There are two Highly Respected Candidates running to be your next Governor in the June 23rd Republican Runoff Election… Both have had amazing careers, and have been with me from the beginning. They are MAGA and America First all the way!” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post on Friday.
“These were the two that I was hoping would get into a Runoff, and they did,” he continued. “I can’t hurt one of them by only Endorsing the other, so, therefore, I am going to Endorse, for Governor of South Carolina, both Pam Evette and Alan Wilson!”
Shortly after Trump’s dual endorsement, Wilson picked up another key endorsement from Sen. Tim Scott (R), the state’s junior senator and the chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC).
“I’m proud to endorse Alan for Governor because he will lead with humility, courage, and an optimistic vision for our state,” Scott said in a statement shared by Wilson’s campaign, calling him a “man of deep faith, strong character, and unwavering conviction.”
Wilson will face state Rep. Jermaine Johnson (D) in the general election.
