(NewsNation) — The man accused of starting the Old Trails Fire near Spokane, Wash., was due in court Tuesday as wildfires across the state force tens of thousands from their homes.
Aaron Farinacci, 37, is charged with first-degree arson for allegedly starting the Old Trails Fire, one of several fires burning in the Spokane area, NewsNation affiliate KREM2 reported. He’s being held on a $1 million bond.
The fires in eastern Washington have caused roughly 60,000 people to evacuate. It’s burned more than 250,000 acres and destroyed at least 600 structures.
How was the suspect caught?
According to officials, the investigation started Aug. 1 after a witness told police they saw a man crouched down in the grass around noon, “looking nervous.” Shortly after, the witness saw smoke coming from that spot.
Police searched for the man during evacuations and found him about four miles from where the fire started but let him go at the time due to insufficient evidence.
Investigators later developed probable cause to arrest him. When he was taken into custody at his home, officials say he was carrying waterproof matches and a butane lighter.
Officials say the investigation is ongoing and additional charges are possible.
Who is Aaron Farinacci?
Farinacci is also a resident of Spokane. Prior court records show he is a convicted felon in Arizona for manslaughter and premeditated murder. He has no previous history of arson.
What about the other fires?
Investigators haven’t yet determined what caused the Fairview and Autumn Lane fires, which are also still being fought. In total, about 390 square miles have burned statewide, and several fires, including those near Spokane, are not yet contained.
