Nasa presented its plan for a permanent moon base at a press conference on Tuesday, which includes permanent human habitation on the satellite by 2032.
Nasa administrator Jared Isaacman said that the space agency seeks to inspire curiosity "as America returns to the moon again and this time to stay".
The plans for a permanent return to the moon come after Nasa's successful Artemis II mission in April, which saw four astronauts make a trip around the Earth's only natural satellite.
