Warning of space arms race as US confirms weapons in Earth's orbit

The US has confirmed it deployed a space weapon in Earth's orbit, the first time it has acknowledged such offensive capabilities.

Russia and China responded by warning of an arms race in space.

However, according to the BBC's Defence correspondent Jonathan Beale, this is already happening.

Details of how the weapon operates have not been disclosed by US officials.
