‘Vintage Violence’ Review: Cole Sprouse Heads Up a Hyper-Online Gonzo Freakout in Japan

'Spree' director Eugene Kotlyarenko continues to be extremely online in a very busy but ultimately underwhelming provocation.

Eugene Kotlyarenko has built a career on drawing upon his widely-viewed cinephilic base of knowledge to consider more contemporary forms of hyper-online, of-the-moment provocation, and “Vintage Violence” is no exception. As with Kotlyarenko’s arguably best-known film, 2020’s “Spree,” live-streaming is key: “Vintage Violence” introduces obnoxious social media celebrity Carter (Cole Sprouse) mid-stream before quickly spinning out into a gangsters-vs-everybody-and-each-other free-for-all. Zipping around Tokyo, Kotlyarenko underlines the of-the-moment-ness of his scenario at every turn, but the film is a surprisingly slow ride despite the overload.
