Vice President Vance hailed what he said was a major progress during direct negotiations between Trump administration officials and their Iranian counterparts at the Burgenstock ski resort in Switzerland on Sunday.

“Yesterday was a very, very good day. We made a lot of good progress. We did exactly what we wanted to do,” Vance said on Monday.

Vance said “a very good foundation” was laid for a successful, final deal.

The vice president referred to four points accomplished during the talks, including the establishment of mechanisms to demine the Strait of Hormuz and for deconfliction for the regional ceasefire., as well as the process for the technical negotiations that will follow.

Vance also announced that Tehran has agreed to permit the International Atomic Energy Agency back into the country, calling it “a major milestone for the American people.”

“That’s exactly what we wanted to do. That’s exactly what we asked to happen. We made a lot of great progress on other nuclear talks,” he said.

Vance arrived in Switzerland on Sunday, alongside President Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, and the president’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, for the first round of talks between Tehran and Washington following the memorandum of understanding (MOU) that was reached between the two countries last week.

The preliminary agreement kicked off a 60-day timeframe to reach the final goal of permanently ending fighting, reopening the Strait of Hormuz and resolving differences over Iran’s nuclear program.

Members of Pakistani leadership, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir, along with Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani were also present. Pakistan has acted as a mediator between the U.S. and Iran during talks to end the war.

The talks were initially set to take place on Friday, but were postponed as a result of an uptick in fighting between Israel and the Iranian-backed military group in Lebanon known as Hezbollah.

Vance said on Monday he would be departing Switzerland.

“I’m about to go back home to the United States, but the technical teams are going to be working with proper oversight to make sure that we’re accomplishing the objectives that matter for everybody,” he said.
