The U.S. is reportedly planning to reopen strikes against Iran as soon as this weekend, U.S. officials told several outlets on Friday.
CBS News reported that Israel is also involved in the plans to launch “one of the harshest bombing campaigns to date” against Iranian energy infrastructure targets, citing multiple sources. The Israeli and U.S. militaries joined forces to launch the initial strikes in this conflict at the end of February.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt reiterated the President Trump’s remarks during a Cabinet meeting earlier in the day at Camp David with top administration officials.
“As President Trump said at his cabinet meeting today, the United States will win, and Iran will not have a nuclear weapon under his watch,” Leavitt told The Hill’s sister network NewsNation.
During the meeting, the president said the U.S. military would be hitting Iran “very hard.”
“At some point, they’re going to say, ‘We just can’t take it anymore,’” he said while reporters were still in the room.
Trump also said Iran is doing “very poorly” and said its leadership has been “very dishonest.”
“They’ve been very dishonorable to deal with, but that makes no difference. They’re doing very, very poorly,” the president told reporters.
The U.S. and Iran have already exchanged fire in recent weeks over alleged infringements of a ceasefire deal adopted under a framework peace agreement in June.
Eighteen U.S. service members have been killed since this conflict broke out six months ago, while 685 have been injured, according to the Pentagon’s Defense Casualty Analysis System.
These recent strikes have sparked concerns of a wider outbreak of conflict in the Middle East, as U.S. allies in the region, including Kuwait, Bahrain and Jordan, have come under fire from Iranian one-way attack drones and missiles.
These escalations are contrasted by growing opposition from the American public to the U.S. military’s involvement in this conflict.
Sixty-four percent of Americans in an AP-NORC survey released this week said that this war was “not worth fighting,” compared to the 33 percent who said that it was.
