The U.S. military’s death toll during the war against Iran has officially climbed to 14 following the death of a Navy pilot in a crash earlier this month.
The Pentagon updated its casualty count to 14 on Monday after the U.S. Navy identified the airman lost over the Arabian Sea last week. The airman, Cmdr. Gabriel Edwards, was the commanding officer of Helicopter Sea Combat (HSC) Squadron 5.
He went missing on July 1 after an MH-60S Seahawk helicopter made an emergency landing in the Arabian Sea.
After over 100 hours of search and rescue efforts, covering more than 14,000 square miles, the Navy suspended the search on July 5. Three other crew members were recovered after the landing in the Arabian Sea. The incident is under investigation.
More than 400 service members have been wounded since the beginning of the Iran war.
The Hill has reached out to the U.S. Central Command (Centcom) for comment.
Six soldiers were killed in an Iranian drone strike on a command center in Kuwait. One service member then died after being injured in a strike while stationed in Saudi Arabia. Six other service members were killed in a KC-135 refueling aircraft crash in Iraq.
The hostilities in the Middle East resumed last week with Iran targeting commercial vessels attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz and the U.S. has fired back, launching four rounds of strikes. The U.S. military launched another barrage of strikes on Monday, hitting targets in Bushehr, Chah Bahar, Jask, Konarak, Abu Musa, and Bandar Abbas, according to Centcom.
