The U.S. military began conducting airstrikes against Iran late Wednesday in retaliation for the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) attacking a U.S. base in Jordan the day before.

The U.S. forces began firing at 8 p.m., according to the U.S. Central Command.

The IRGC fired five missiles at U.S. forces in Jordan on Tuesday evening. Hours later, the U.S. and Saudi Arabia launched strikes on Iran-backed militias in Iraq, raising the risk of returning the region to all-out war.

The fresh round of strikes comes as President Trump warned Wednesday morning in an interview with Fox News that the U.S. will “beat the f—ing s— out of them.”

Later in the day, the president said at the White House it is the U.S. military’s “turn” to strike Iran.

“In the meantime, we’re going to be hitting them very hard because it’s our turn to hit them. They know it’s coming. They’re asking us not to do it, but you know they tried shooting at us last night,” the president told reporters.

The tit-for-tat strikes on Tuesday occurred after the president halted strikes against Iran over the weekend to leave some room for potential diplomatic negotiations with Tehran. Previously, the U.S. military carried out 13 consecutive nights of strikes against Iran.

The pause came as Trump was considering authorizing a major airstrike campaign, an effort backed by Republican defense hawks on Capitol Hill, but the president reportedly held off, in part, over concerns of widening the conflict and the U.S. dwindling munition stockpiles.
